| I am getting divorced - now what? |
Back |
Unfortunately, owners of a business may face the unpleasant reality of divorce. In marital divorces, the value of the business is often one of the most disputed issues. A strong, defendable valuation must be presented. Additionally, there must be a sound understanding of the business owner’s earnings - which will determine the amount of the support payment. Be careful that the profits the company is generating are not double counted: once in the support payment computation and once in the valuation. The importance of retaining a divorce attorney who has experience with divorces involving businesses cannot be over emphasized.
Strategic Valuation Group seeks to assist throughout the divorce process. Typically, in the early stages of the process, attempts are made at settling. During this process, we can perform value "calculations" to give the team a potential range of value to work from. Value calculations are less expensive than a full appraisal. If negotiations break down, we are then able to expand our analysis to hone in on a single opinion of value and prepare a report sufficient for the Trier of Fact to review.
We work closely with the attorney to support them in litigating the valuation issues at hand. And, we have the highest level of qualifications and credentials in the valuation arena. See our litigation support services page to learn more.
